Simi Valley Woman Drowns While Swimming In The Ocean Off Ventura Sunday

Sunday March 05, 2023

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office says a Simi Valley woman drowned Sunday afternoon while swimming in the ocean off Pierpont Beach in Ventura.

The incident was reported around 3:10 PM.

There was a 9-1-1 call reporting a swimmer was missing in the ocean near the end of Seaward Avenue.

An extensive land, sea, and air search was launched to find her.

She was finally spotted in the water about 40 minutes later by the Ventura County Air Unit Copter 9.

     Rescue swimmers brought her ashore.

     They say she was unresponsive.

Advanced life saving efforts were administered as she was taken by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as 31-year-old Devyn Chesser of Simi Valley.

Sheriff's Captain William Hutton told KVTA News that Chesser had been with a group of friends at the beach.

He says their Major Crimes Bureau responded which is standard procedure on any death in the ocean off the coast of Ventura County and they believe this was an accidental drowning.
