Suspect In Double Fatal Oxnard Crash Due In Court Monday

Sunday April 02, 2023

Updated--The driver arrested last week in connection with a double fatal crash in Oxnard in February is due in court Monday to face arraignment.

Police accuse the 19-year-old male driver and sole occupant of a 2022 Hyundai Sonata with speeding and reckless driving that led to the crash.

After a month long investigation, he was booked into the Ventura County Jail on two counts of Gross Vehicular Manslaughter-NOT involving DUI.

Police say the crash happened shortly after midnight on the morning of February 12, 2023 at Fifth Street and Portofino Place in Oxnard.

They say the Hyundai Sonata collided with a 2020 Honda Civic.

One person in the Civic, 31-year-old Samuel Jose Castro, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other person in the Civic, 44-year-old Annette Viviana, died at VCMC.

Castro and Viviana were both out of county residents.

The 19-year-old driving the Sonata stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators who took more than a month looking into the crash before deciding that the 19-year-old was criminally responsible for what happened.

He is been held in the Ventura County Jail with bail set at $80,000 since last Thursday.
