Jury Deliberations Continue In Trial Of Camarillo Man Accused Of Violence Against Girl And Elderly Women

Friday July 19, 2024

Update--Jury deliberations will continue Monday in the trial of a Camarillo man accused of violence against a little girl and two elderly women on separate days and locations in October of 2020.

The panel has spent more than a week considering the fate of 28-year-old Joel Gonzales who has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the attempted murder of a 6-year-old girl and the sexual assaults of two women in their 80's and 90's.

The jury got the case on the afternoon of July 11th and their deliberations have been interrupted on two occasions, once to get a "read back" of Gonzales's testimony and the other when the court received a note from the jury apparently regarding an allegation of juror misconduct.

The note prompted the judge to spend much of this past Thursday questioning each juror separately before ruling that there was no juror misconduct.

The judge did admonish the jury about evidence and following the law and then told them to resume deliberations.

The jury then spent the rest of this past Thursday and Friday continuing their deliberations before recessing for this weekend.

If the jury convicts Gonzales, then they must decide whether he was sane or not when the alleged crimes were committed.
