Ventura County DA Involved In Effort To Ban A-I Generated Child Pornography

Tuesday January 30, 2024

Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko is co-sponsoring legislation aimed at stopping the use of artificial intelligence to create child pornography.

He is part of a coalition of district attorneys, Common Sense Media, Sag-AFTRA, and the University of San Diego School of Law Children Advocacy Institute whose goal is to stop the use of A-I before it takes hold of the creation of child sexual abuse material.

Assembly Bill 1831 by Assemblyman Mark Berman would make the creation and possession of child pornography using A-I generated images of children just as illegal and just as punishable as child sexual abuse material that uses real children.

They are concerned because in recent cases involving A-I generated child pornography the people responsible could not be prosecuted because the children seen in the material were not real.

Their position is that whether it is a real child or a computer generated child, its destructive impact on society and its children is just as bad and can lead to an increase in the sexual abuse of real children.
