Oxnard Woman Killed In Crash Near Ventura

Monday May 22, 2023

The CHP says an Oxnard woman was killed just after dawn Monday morning near Ventura in a crash that started with a deer in the roadway.

They say it happened around 5:35 AM on Telegraph Road east of Pistachio Avenue just east of the Ventura City limits.

The weather conditions at the time were cloudy, cool, and dry.

The CHP says that 51-year-old Maria Lopez of Oxnard was driving a 2020 Nissan Kicks eastbound on Telegraph when she struck a deer in the roadway and then traveled into the westbound lane where her vehicle collided with a 2015 Ford Explorer traveling westbound.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her 60-year-old male passenger from Oxnard as well as the 47-year-old female driver of the Ford Explorer from Simi Valley and her 26-year-old female passenger from Oxnard were taken to local hospitals with injuries described by the CHP as minor to moderate.

The CHP says alcohol and drugs were NOT a factor in the crash.

They are still investigating the crash and are asking anyone they've not talked to who might have information that would help in the investigation to call the CHP office in Ventura at (805) 662-2640.

The crash closed Telegraph in both directions between Olive and Wells roads for three hours Monday morning.
