Updated--Ventura County authorities are still trying to determine why a lifelong friendship between two Thousand Oaks men ended with one allegedly killing the other.

Wednesday night deputies responded to a single family home in the 2400 block of Avenida De Las Plantas where they found 80-year-old Gerald Sherman fatally shot.

His roommate and lifelong friend, 80-year-old Edward Fegley, was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for murder.

Detectives recovered a .22 caliber rifle from the residence that they believe was used in the homicide.

They say the two men had been involved in an altercation prior to the fatal shooting but they are still trying to determine exactly what happened that prompted the killing.

Detectives have been interviewing friends and family members, reviewing, analyzing, and processing digital and physical evidence collected at the scene.

Meanwhile, as of Friday, Fegley remained in the jail with bail set at $790,000 and is due in court Monday to be arraigned.
