Friday April 19, 2024

Updated--Opening statements and testimony were presented Friday in the trial of an Oxnard man facing murder charges in connection with a double fatal DUI related crash that killed a Camarillo woman and her granddaughter.

24-year-old Jacob Caliboso is facing two counts of second-degree murder in connection with the June 22, 2020 head-on traffic collision on Pleasant Valley Road east of Rice Avenue.

After both sides presented their opening statements Friday morning the first witnesses testified including the CHP officer who handled the investigation into the crash.

The CHP said at the time that Caliboso was driving his car westbound on Pleasant Valley when he allowed his vehicle to travel over the double yellow line into the eastbound lane.

He crashed into a scooter traveling eastbound on Pleasant Valley Road being ridden by 55-year-old Elva Andrade of Camarillo and her 7-year-old granddaughter Neveah of Oxnard.

Both were wearing helmets and were ejected from the scooter.

Andrade died at the scene, and Neveah died later at VCMC.

Caliboso was arrested by the CHP for gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs.

The DA added the murder charges later.

Caliboso has pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied all special allegations.

Caliboso remains in the Ventura County Jail with bail set at $500,000.

      The trial will continue Monday.
