Ventura County Hazmat Units were working to identify and mitigate a hazardous materials incident in Thousand Oaks that sent a 14-year-old male juvenile to the hospital.
The incident, described as an accident, was reported around 5:15 PM at a home in the 1300 block of Calle Avellano near Calle Olivo.
The victim was working with at least two substances when there was a chemical reaction and the teen suffered an injury.
He was taken to Los Robles Medical Center by a family member before first responders arrived on scene.
In addition to hazmat units at the home, another was sent to the hospital to make sure there was no hazard there and there was not.
Meanwhile, hazmat units with the help of the Ventura County Sheriff's Bomb Squad and Arson Unit were working to determine exactly what chemicals were involved and plan how they were going to mitigate the situation.
Residents in a three block radius around the incident were told to shelter in place but that was lifted after a few hours.
The sheriff's office says the bomb squad and arson unit were there to lend their expertise and to manage the shelter in place order and conduct any traffic control and not because of any indication that a crime had occurred.
It fact they say the incident was an accident.
They said the fire department was conducting the investigation into what happened.
