Son Originally Charged With Murdering His Father Gets 12 Years In Prison For Manslaughter Instead

     Updated--A Ventura man originally charged with murder in the death of his father in Moorpark was sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday after being allowed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter instead.

     Now 25-year-old Jason Fernandes fatally stabbed his 73-year-old father Michael with a pair of scissors.

     He also admitted several special allegations including that he used a deadly weapon.

     There had been reports that the younger Fernandes suffered from psychological problems.

     It was March 9, 2022, that deputies responded to a report of a family disturbance in an apartment in the 4700 block of Park Lane in Moorpark.

     When deputies arrived, they found Fernandes's 73-year-old father Michael unresponsive and suffering from several injuries.

     He was rushed to Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died.

     Meanwhile, Jason Fernandes had fled on foot into a nearby arroyo or wash.

     He was quickly located by deputies and taken into custody without further incident.
