Thursday December 20, 2018

Updated--The Ventura County District Attorney's Office says it has charged a Santa Paula police officer with auto insurance fraud.

Prosecutors say it has to do with a crash in Ventura on January 8, 2018.

Santa Paula Police Officer Matthew Arthur Alonzo of Ventura told the Automobile Club of Southern California that he witnessed the collision and that he did not personally know any of the people involved.

Prosecutors allege the 39-year-old Alonzo did know one of the people involved, it was a former Santa Paula police officer that Alonzo had worked with in the past.

The DA's office filed one felony count of insurance fraud.

Alonzo remains free on bail pending his arraignment on January 4, 2019.

The Santa Paula Police Department issued a statement saying that Alonzo is a 10-year veteran of the department and is considered innocent and they will reserve judgment until such time as the legal proceedings are concluded.

For now, they say Alonzo has been placed on administrative leave.

If convicted, the maximum sentence would be five years in the Ventura County Jail.
