Monday September 26, 2022

Updated--An Oxnard woman pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of the attempted murder of a 75-year-old man.

The Ventura County District Attorney's Office alleged 30-year-old Stephanie Mendez stabbed the man in what police called an unprovoked attack in Lemonwood Park.

Mendez also pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon and she denied several special allegations including violence against an elderly and vulnerable victim.

The judge ordered her held without bail.

Police say on the morning of June 6th, the victim was walking through the park when for no apparent reason the female suspect stabbed him in the neck.

Witnesses told police the suspect then fled on foot.

The victim had to undergo emergency surgery.

Police say their investigation determined that Mendez was the suspect.

On September 21st, they served a search warrant at her residence not far from the park and she was arrested.
