Oxnard Man Sentenced In Death Of Baby Boy
Tuesday April 25, 2023
Update--The final chapter of a tragedy played out Tuesday when an Oxnard man was sentenced in connection with the death of a baby boy.
24-year-old David Luna was sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison after pleading guilty to First Degree Murder for killing little Diego just hours after the infant was born at Saint John's Medical Center in Oxnard in July of 2019.
Luna's girlfriend and Diego's mother, 24-year-old Andrea Camacho, was sentenced last week to 15-years-to-life in prison after pleading guilty to Second Degree Murder for her role in Diego's death.
Camacho, reportedly pregnant from an alleged rape by another man in Mexico, did not want the baby.
On July 18, 2019 she went into labor at Saint John's and gave birth to a healthy Diego.
That night she and Luna attempted to kill Diego in the hospital and ultimately Luna strangled the child, put him back in the bassinet, and called a nurse.
Diego was taken to the ICU and died the next day.
Prosecutors say Camacho showed symptoms of "postpartum depression" at the time of her arrest.
Prosecutors say this tragedy could have been avoided under the state's "safe surrender" law that allows the parent or legal guardian of a newborn to confidentially and legally surrender the child to the personnel at a hospital or fire station as long as the baby has not been abused or neglected.
