Oxnard Man Sentenced For Traffic Deaths Of Woman And Her Granddaughter

     Updated--An Oxnard man has been sentenced to 30-years-to-life in prison for the DUI-related traffic deaths of a woman and her granddaughter.

     A jury spent less than two days in deliberations last April before convicting 25-year-old Jacob Caliboso of two counts of second degree murder.

     At the sentencing hearing Tuesday, victim impact statements were made by family members and friends of the victims.

     Caliboso also made a statement to the court.

     On the night of June 22, 2020, Caliboso was driving his car westbound on Pleasant Valley Road east of Rice Avenue near Oxnard when he allowed his vehicle to travel over the double yellow line into the eastbound lane.

     He crashed into a scooter traveling eastbound on Pleasant Valley Road being ridden by 55-year-old Elva Andrade of Camarillo and her 7-year-old granddaughter Neveah Gomez of Oxnard.

     Both were wearing helmets and were ejected from the scooter.

     Andrade died at the scene, and Neveah at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles the next day.

     There was no evidence that Caliboso tried to brake or avoid the scooter.

     Prosecutors say the CHP found more than a 1,000 social media posts by Caliboso showing him abusing large amounts of Xanax in the weeks leading up to and including the day of the crash.

     Caliboso did not deny the drug use but the defense argued that there was insufficient evidence to show the malice or intent needed to prove a murder charge.

     But prosecutors say Caliboso's extensive repeated abuse of the drugs and driving impaired showed a criminal disregard for the safety of others that justified the murder charges.

     Caliboso testified in his own defense and much of the jury's time deliberating was spent getting his testimony read back to them.
