Thursday December 07, 2023
Update--An Oxnard man facing a first degree murder charge in connection with the fatal stabbing of another Oxnard man in a park has been ordered to stand trial.
Following a preliminary hearing Thursday, the judge held 38-year-old Edgar Mendoza to answer for the killing of 32-year-old Jorge Maldonado on August 15, 2021, at Del Sol Park in the 1800 block of Camino Del Sol in Oxnard.
The authorities allege the two men were involved in an altercation when the stabbing happened.
Maldonado died two days later at the hospital.
The authorities say that after the stabbing, Mendoza fled to Merced County.
Oxnard police worked with the authorities in Merced in an effort to locate Mendoza.
Ultimately they learned that Mendoza had returned to Oxnard and he was located and arrested without incident in February of 2022.
Mendoza has pleaded not guilty.
He remains in jail and is being held without bail.
Mendoza will be back in court in two weeks to have a trial date set.
