One person was found dead in a fire in one of the rooms of a five-story residence hotel in downtown Ventura Sunday morning.

The fire at the Ventura Inn at Main and California streets was reported at 9:47 AM.

Crews were on scene in less than four minutes and were able to use the building's standpipe to keep the fire contained to only the room of origin.

Unfortunately, they discovered a deceased person in the room.

Ten other residents were assessed for medical issues at the scene but none of them needed transport to the hospital.

With the exception of one floor and a portion of another, residents were able to return to their rooms once the fire was fully extinguished and the smoke cleared.

Those who were displaced were being helped by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as do the circumstances surrounding the death of the person found in the room where the fire started.

The Ventura Inn was built in 1926 on the site of the old Ventura City Hall.
