The CHP has released more details about the double fatal crash on the southbound 101 near Wendy Drive in Newbury Park early Thursday morning.

They say shortly before 5:30 AM a 2016 Honda Accord driven by a 19-year-old male from Pico Rivera smashed into the rear of a tractor trailer rig parked on the right shoulder of the freeway.

The sedan then continued out of control on the shoulder, collided with a large boulder, overturned, and landed on its top.

A male and female passenger were ejected and landed in the brush.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver was also ejected but suffered only a minor injury.

The third passenger in the Honda, a 20-year-old from Castaic, was trapped in the overturned vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighters.

That passenger was taken to Los Robles Medical Center with moderate injuries.

Two people in the big rig were not hurt.

The CHP did not indicate any legal action taken against the driver of the Honda.
