Wednesday March 22, 2023

Updated--Following a preliminary hearing Wednesday, a judge ordered an Oxnard man to stand trial in connection with what the authorities say was a fatal DUI hit and run traffic collision that claimed the life of a pedestrian.

20-year-old Luiz Armando Ayala has pleaded not guilty to felony Gross Vehicular Manslaughter While Intoxicated, felony Hit and Run, and misdemeanor being an Unlicensed Driver.

He also denied special allegations including fleeing the scene of an accident involving death.

Police say that around 3:30 AM Sunday July 17, 2022 Ayala was driving a 2020 Dodge Challenger when he allegedly struck a pedestrian on southbound Rose Avenue south of Gonzales Road near Saint John's Medical Center.

The pedestrian, a 58-year-old Santa Barbara man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police also allege Ayala fled the scene but was tracked down by an officer at another location and taken into custody.

Ayala remains free on bail and is due in court on April 6th to have a trial date set.
