Updated--The man shot and wounded by a Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy has been found mentally competent to face criminal charges.
The attorney for 38-year-old Adan Perez Hernandez had earlier raised a doubt about his ability to understand the charges against him and aid in his defense.
But a court-appointed psychologist found that he was competent and the judge Thursday reinstated the criminal case against Hernandez.
The sheriff's office says that on June 30th a deputy shot and wounded Hernandez after he came at the deputy with a knife and with what looked like a homemade bow and arrow.
The incident started when deputies responded to a report of a subject with a knife in the area of Avenida De Los Arboles near Erbes Road who was walking in and out of traffic.
The sheriff's office says when deputies made contact with Hernandez he was armed with a knife and what looked like a homemade bow and arrow.
They say Hernandez advanced towards deputies in a threatening manner.
Deputies issued several verbal commands to Hernandez to drop the weapons, but they say he did not comply and continued to aggressively approach.
As a result, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
They say a knife and another item that looked similar to a bow was recovered at the scene.
No deputies were injured.
Hernandez survived his wounds and was arrested and jailed on several charges related to the incident.
The Critical Incident Report issued by the Sheriff's Office Wednesday includes photos from the body worn video cameras of the two deputies.
It also includes a narrative by Sheriff Jim Fryhoff.
