Updated--The Ventura County Sheriff's Office says the machete-wielding man shot by a deputy at a Newbury Park shopping center on October 24th is now out of the hospital and in jail facing charges in connection with the incident.

On Friday 50-year-old Joseph Emans of Thousand Oaks was in court and pleaded not guilty to Arson, Vandalism, Attempted Carjacking, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Assault on a Peace Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office says the series of events leading up to and including the deputy-involved shooting at the Ventu Park shopping center on the morning of October 24th started when Emans is alleged to have used a machete to smash a window at the nearby Palm Garden Hotel.

Investigators say the suspect then walked to the 76 gasoline station where he used the machete to assault a man and carjack his vehicle.

The victim sustained a minor injury.

At some point he is alleged to have set fire to a vehicle.

They say the suspect then walked away from the carjacked vehicle and confronted another man who was inside his vehicle that was parked in the lot of the Ventu Park shopping center.

The suspect used the machete to vandalize that victim's vehicle but that victim was not injured.

By then deputies had arrived and tried to detain the suspect who was still holding the machete but they say he was non-compliant.

A deputy deployed a Taser but they say it was ineffective and the suspect fled on foot.

The deputies gave chase as they went northbound through the shopping center, past the Ralph's Market, to the Hillcrest Drive side of the center and the Bakery Panadaria.

Investigators say at that point the suspect, still holding the machete, started moving towards employees in what they described as a threatening manner, prompting the deputy-involved shooting.

Emans was taken to the nearby trauma center where he underwent surgery and ultimately recovered.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

Emans remains in jail with bail set at $100,000 and is due back in court Tuesday for a Bail Review.
