Man Arrested After Armed Standoff With Oxnard Police
Tuesday October 08, 2024
A 40-year-old man is in custody after a standoff with Oxnard police at a residence in the Riverpark area near the Collection.
The incident started at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon with a report of a structure fire at a home in the 2700 block of Colonia Avenue.
When Oxnard firefighters arrived on scene they saw a small amount of smoke that appeared to be coming from an ADU behind the main house.
But when they went to deal with it they encountered a man who was armed with two large knives and acting in a strangely violent way.
So firefighters backed out of the area and called police.
Oxnard PD ultimately sent in the SWAT Team, a K-9, an armored vehicle, less lethal weapons, and a drone.
They tried to get the man to surrender but he refused and at various times armed himself with knives and garden shears.
He also reportedly threw rocks at the patrol cars and officers staged in the alley behind the house.
He roamed around the backyard, went into the ADU, and also a non-operational pick-up truck, and then back into the yard.
The police, who knew who he was and had dealt with him in the past, continued to try to get him to surrender and at 5:45 PM, an hour and 15 minutes after it began, the incident ended when the man opened the back gate and gave up.
No injuries were reported.
The man was booked into the Ventura County Jail for Arson of an Inhabited Dwelling, Felony Vandalism, Assault on a Peace Officer or Firefighter, Resisting Arrest, and Making Criminal Threats.
His bail was set at $50,000 and he is due in court Thursday.
