Simi Valley police are crediting a witness for preventing a group of thieves from getting away with the safe from a business early Sunday morning.

The witness called police around 1 AM Sunday and reported seeing four suspects wearing dark clothing and masks inside of a closed business in the 2200 block of Tapo Street.

The suspects were attempting to load a safe into their vehicle.

When they spotted the witness, the suspects dropped the safe, got into their vehicle, and fled.

The vehicle’s license plate was covered but based on the witness’s description responding officers spotted the vehicle and there was a pursuit from Simi Valley into Los Angeles that was ultimately terminated because of safety concerns over high speeds and reckless driving by the suspects.

But the safe and the money inside were recovered back at the scene.

Ventura County’s unemployment rate for September was 4.8 percent.

That was almost a half point lower than August but still above September of last year when it was 4.6 percent.

It is a half point lower than the average in California but almost a full point higher than the national average.

As far as jobs are concerned in Ventura County there were 600 more from month-to-month and 5500 more from year-to-year.

Month-to-month almost all of the job growth was in government while year-to-year almost all of it was in government plus professional and business services, and private education and health services.

Oxnard police conducted another minor decoy operation last Friday, this time it had to do with tobacco products.

A person under the age of 21 and under supervision by officers entered nine businesses that sell tobacco or tobacco products including E-cigarettes.

The minor decoy attempted to buy tobacco products and was turned down in all nine attempts.

Police say the minor decoy appeared young, provided I-D if asked, and made no attempt to mislead the seller.

It should also be noted that in California active military personnel can buy tobacco products when they are 18 years old for everyone else it is 21.
