KVTA Into The Weekend Briefs

Sunday February 16, 2025

Oxnard police are investigating two fatal traffic collisions involving pedestrians in as many days and in both cases it appears the pedestrians were at fault.

The latest was Sunday morning around 4:50 AM in the area of Fifth Street and Rose Avenue.

Police say a 29-year-old Oxnard man was driving eastbound on Fifth Street east of Rose when he struck an male pedestrian who was not in a marked crosswalk.

The pedestrian died at the scene.

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators who do NOT believe that speed or impairment were involved.

Oxnard police say almost exactly two days earlier a pedestrian was killed after being struck by two vehicles.

The accident happened shortly after 6 AM Friday morning near the intersection of Hueneme Road and Salvador Drive.

They say the pedestrian, a 70-year-old Oxnard man, was walking in the traffic lanes eastbound on Hueneme Road when the first vehicle hit him.

The 45-year-old Oxnard man driving the 2000 Toyota Tacoma immediately stopped at the scene.

Police say before he could check on the pedestrian, a 2006 Toyota Matrix driven by a 39-year-old Oxnard man struck the pedestrian.

The driver of the second car also stopped at the scene.

The pedestrian was taken to VCMC where he died.

The two drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators who say it does not appear that speed, alcohol, or drugs were involved in the incident.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office has charged a Santa Paula man with molesting two children he knew through a familial relationship.

Prosecutors allege that 57-year-old Martin Herrejon Vieyra committed the sexual abuse over decades.

The two alleged victims were under the age of 14 at the time of the alleged abuse.

Vieyra, who was arrested outside of his Santa Paula home last week, was booked into the Ventura County Jail with bail set at $100,000.

His arraignment was continued to March 14th.

The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office says that a Los Angeles County man with a history of vehicle thefts has been sentenced for the high tech heist of high-end vehicles in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

23-year-old Joel Quinonez of Compton was sentenced this past week to 16 months in the Ventura County Jail after pleading guilty to one felony count of auto theft.

Prosecutors say that Quinonez was a member of a gang of car thieves that stole several newer-model vehicles between October and November of last year using tools that allowed them to gain electronic access to unlock and operate the vehicles.

They say Quinonez was on probation for felony grand theft auto at the time he was committing these crimes.

Port Hueneme police say a traffic violation late Saturday morning led to a four minute pursuit through the streets of that city that included a minor injury hit and run collision .

It ended in the area of the 3400 block of Kern Street when the driver jumped out and ran.

Police say that 33-year-old Juan Contreras of Oxnard was caught and taken into custody but only after officers used a Taser.

Two other people in the vehicle fled and are still at large.

Police say Contreras was wanted on a no bail warrant for violation of his probation for auto theft.

He was arrested for felony evading, felony hit and run, possession of stolen property, and the warrant.

Police say the stolen property was a fire hydrant found in the Cadillac Escalade Contreras was driving.

Now they just have to determine whose fire hydrant it is.
