Updated--After two days of deliberations, a Ventura County jury returned mixed verdicts in a Simi Valley murder trial.
The jury convicted 32-year-old Euren Balbuena of first degree murder in the stabbing death of his girlfriend, 31-year-old Zaira Patino-Trejo, but they found him not guilty of attempted murder in the attack on her mother.
Instead they found Balbuena guilty of assault with a deadly weapon regarding her mother.
The jury also found true a special allegation that he used a deadly weapon, several knives, in Patino-Trejo's death but they issued mixed verdicts regarding other special allegations.
They did find him guilty of misdemeanor domestic battery.
Balbuena testified in his own defense during the trial.
The incident happened in the morning of February 27, 2020 in an apartment in the 5400 block of East Los Angeles Avenue in Simi Valley.
Officers had responded to a welfare check and found Patino's mother outside of the apartment seeking help and being treated for facial lacerations and other injuries that sent her to the hospital.
They found her daughter, Patino, on the kitchen floor of the apartment dead from more than 30 stab wounds.
Officers also found Balbuena in the apartment and he was taken into custody without incident.
Balbuena is being held without bail and is scheduled to be sentenced on January 17th.
