A Ventura County jury has convicted an Oxnard man in connection with a 2019 shooting in Port Hueneme that left a little girl paralyzed and her mother wounded.
The jury found 27-year-old Jaylin Edwards guilty of attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, and two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
They also found true two dozen special allegations.
On the night of July 2, 2019, Edwards and a 17-year-old juvenile went to a house in the 100 block of East Pearl Street in Port Hueneme where they believed a man they were looking for lived.
Prosecutors say from outside of the home the two suspects fired a dozen shots, at least eight penetrated the home where a family of five were sitting in their living room.
Three of the bullets hit the family members including a 7-year-old girl and her pregnant mother.
The little girl was shot in the head and was in a coma at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.
The mother was wounded in the leg and foot and was treated and released.
The little girl came out of the coma and after three months was released from the hospital but prosecutors say she remains paralyzed on the left side of her body and has permanent cognitive impairment.
They say Edwards and the 17-year-old juvenile fled the scene but the teenager was ultimately caught that month and one of the two guns was recovered.
It wasn't until December of 2021 that Edwards was tracked down in San Bernardino and taken into custody.
They never found the second gun.
The 17-year-old's case is still pending in juvenile court.
Meanwhile, Edwards remains in jail without bail and is due to be sentenced on January 10th.
He is facing a maximum possible sentence of more than 73-years-to-life in prison.
