Drunk, Wrong Way Driver, In Fatal 101 Ventura Crash Sentenced

     Updated--The Santa Barbara man who was drunk, unlicensed, and driving the wrong way on the 101 Freeway in downtown Ventura last year when he killed one person and injured several others, was sentenced Tuesday.

     Now 30-years-old, Jesus Calles was sentenced to ten years in state prison and immediately taken into custody.

     In August, he had pleaded guilty to Felony Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while Intoxicated, Felony Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Causing Injury, and Misdemeanor Driving without a License.

     The crash happened shortly after 3 AM on December 18, 2021 on the northbound 101 near California Street.

     Prosecutors and the CHP said that Calles was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when he crashed head-on into a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Juan Morales of Ojai.

     Morales was killed, his passenger was injured.

     Two people in a third vehicle were also injured.

     Calles was also injured and arrested in the hospital and later released.

      He remained free on bail until Tuesday's sentencing.
