Defendant In Camarillo Attempted Murder Case May Not Be Competent To Face Charges
Sunday September 10, 2023
Updated--The Camarillo man charged with attempted murder in the box cutter attack on another man might not be mentally competent to face trial.
That issued was raised Friday in the case of 41-year-old Grant Rhodes.
The judge suspended the criminal procedings and set September 28th for a competency hearing.
Rhodes had earlier pleaded not guilty to all charges and denied all Special Allegations including having prior felony convictions and committing a crime while out on bail for another crime.
The authorities allege that on the night of June 10th Rhodes used a box cutter to attack the adult male victim at the victim's home in the 200 block of Nellora Street in Camarillo and then fled.
The victim was treated at the hospital for several cuts to his neck and then released.
Meanwhile, Rhodes turned himself in to the authorities the next day.
The issue raised Friday is not about his mental state at the time of the crime but rather is he competent now to understand the charges against him and aid in his defense.
According to court records, Rhodes has an extensive criminal record including both felony and misdemeanor convictions involving drugs, DUI, and violence against peace officers or other emergency personnel.
He also was arrested previously for misdemeanor elder abuse.
Rhodes remains in custody with bail set at $120,000.
