The Ventura County Sheriff's Office says federal grant money from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has helped an array of local, state, and federal agencies go after illegal drug smuggling through the Port of Hueneme.
They say the money is critical to funding the difficult and time consuming task of going through huge cargo ships looking for drugs like cocaine that might be hidden in shipping boxes.
The funds take care of the cost of personnel and resources to conduct the searches.
This year alone, between January and July, there have been four large seizures of cocaine.
The recent seizures at the Port of Hueneme have an estimated street value between $9 million and $16 million.
The grant money was accepted by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors and is managed by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office of Narcotics Unit.
