VPD GENERIC NIGHT2

Ventura Police Investigate Fatal Traffic Collision Involving Pedestrian

Monday March 03, 2025

The Ventura Police Department tells KVTA News that an apparent homeless man and one of his dogs were killed in a traffic accident Monday night.

It happened shortly before 7:30 PM in the southbound lanes of Victoria Avenue at Avocet.

Police say the pedestrian was in the northern crosswalk pushing his cart westbound from the Ralph's shopping center towards the Walmart shopping center.

They say he was about half way across when his cart overturned spilling his belongings onto the roadway.

While he was bent down picking them up the signal light turned green for southbound traffic and a vehicle traveling southbound in the left lane apparently did not see him and he was struck and killed.

One of his two dogs was also struck and killed but the other was not hurt.

The driver of the vehicle stopped, stayed at the scene, and cooperated with investigators.

Police say it appears there were no issues regarding any impairment with the driver.

The incident shut down southbound Victoria between Ralston Street and Moon Drive for several hours.
