Updated--Oxnard police are investigating an officer involved shooting Monday night that left the suspect wounded.

It began around 8:15 PM when officers responded to a report of shots fired from a vehicle in the 3700 block of Leeward Way just east of Victoria Avenue.

When they arrived on scene the officers saw a male subject who matched the description of the suspect provided by the caller.

Police say suspect was armed with a gun but refused to put it down when ordered by the officers several times as they tried to de-escalate the situation.

Then police say the subject pointed his gun at the officers and that prompted them to open fire striking him.

The suspect, a 34-year-old Oxnard man, was treated at the scene and then taken by ambulance to VCMC where police say he was in stable condition.

They say once he has recovered he will be facing criminal charges.

No one else was injured in the incident and police will be releasing a much more detailed "Critical Incident" report that will include video from the officers' body worn cameras.
