Ventura Standoff Ends In Suicide

Monday July 29, 2019

Ventura police say a standoff with a man with a gun at a trailer park Monday morning ended with a suicide.

They say at 7:50 AM officers responded to a report of a subject with a handgun making threats inside a residence in the 3900 block of Telegraph Road west of Ashwood Avenue in Ventura.

Police were told that the 71-year-old man inside the mobile home had been drinking and had threatened his wife with a gun.

They say the wife and granddaughter had fled the residence and called police saying there were several weapons inside.

Police set up a perimeter and evacuated the surrounding trailers.

They also brought in their armored vehicle.

During this time a crisis negotiator had made telephone contact with the man in an effort to get him to disarm and come out and surrender, but to no avail.

During that time the man had made several statements that indicated he wanted to kill himself.

More than an hour passed when they heard gunshots coming from inside the trailer.

Police say the SWAT team was activated and they ultimately made entry and found the man deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
