Santa Paula Mother Jailed For Felony Arson/Felony Child Abuse In Sunday Night Apartment Fire

Monday December 2, 2019

Updated--A Santa Paula mother has been jailed for felony arson and felony child abuse in connection with Sunday night's apartment fire in that city.

Her bail is set at $550,000.

Around 6:10 PM Sunday, police received a call of an apartment fire on Bahia Circle and were told two people were tied up in that apartment.

They were also told that the fire was intentionally set.

Firefighters arrived on scene and found a contents fire in the downstairs living room.

They put the fire out and rescued 47-year-old Marcela Magana Ruiz of Santa Paula and her 3-year-old son.

Mother and son were taken to Santa Paula Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Police and fire personnel then conducted a criminal investigation into the incident.

Detectives say following lengthy interviews with Ruiz, they determined that she had allegedly placed a plastic bag over the head of her 3-year-old son and tied his hands before placing him in a bedroom by himself.

She is then alleged to have set the fire.

They say her motive is unknown and the investigation is on-going.

She was booked into the Ventura County Jail and remains there with her bail set at $550,000.

Ruiz is due in court Wednesday to face arraignment.
