Simi Valley Man Guilty Of Voluntary Manslaughter In The Stabbing Death Of His Stepson

Tuesday June 11, 2019

A Ventura Couny jury Tuesday convicted a Simi Valley man of Voluntary Manslaughter in the stabbing death of his stepson almost three years ago.

Prosecutors had argued that 65-year-old Howard Novak should be found guilty of murder in the August 2016 death of 28-year-old Kelly Hughes.

The defense argued it was self defense.

The jury apparently decided to chose something in the middle.

Novak stabbed Hughes during a confrontation in the family home in the 2200 block of Heitter Avenue in Simi Valley.

The two men had been enbroiled in a long standing feud.

The jury deliberated for less than two days before returning the guilty verdict on voluntary manslaughter plus a special allegation of use of a knife.

Novak will be sentenced July 11th and he faces a maximum sentence of 12 years as opposed to what would have been 16-years-to-life in prison if he had been convicted on the murder charge.

Given credit for time he has already served awaiting trial, plus good time credits, his remaining time behind bars will be far less than 12 years.
