The Ventura County District Attorney's Office says they've charged a Simi Valley man with killing a mountain lion.
They accuse 60-year-old Afredo Gonzalez of Simi Valley with the fatal shooting of P-38, one of the mountain lions that was being monitored by scientists in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area.
On July 2, 2019, a mortality signal was detected from P-38's collar.
It was later determined that P-38 died from a gunshot wound to the head.
P-38 was a male mountain lion born in 2012 and first fitted with a GPS collar in 2015.
He primarily roamed the Santa Susana Mountains.
Killing a mountain lion without a special permit from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is illegal.
Gonzalez was notified that he was being charged with killing a protected mammal and for vandalism to its collar.
He is due in court October 9th to face arraignment.
