Police Say Oxnard Gang Member On Probation Found Sitting On A Gun In A Vehicle That Drove Past School

Tuesday October 9, 2018

Oxnard police say they arrested a documented gang member after they found him sitting on a gun in a vehicle that drove past an elementary school.

Officers stopped the vehicle Tuesday afternoon around 2 PM in the area of Rose and Channel Islands Boulevard.

They made contact with a passenger that police say is a documented gang member on probation.

Because of that, they ordered 28-year-old Alberto Herrera of Oxnard out of the vehicle to be searched based on the terms of his probation.

Police say when they did, the officers discovered that Herrera was sitting on a large handgun.

They arrested him for having the gun but they also arrested him because the vehicle Herrera was in had just driven past an elementary school and police say that's a violation of California law regarding having a gun within 1,000 feet of a school.
