The Ventura Police Department released its 2018 Part 1 crime statistics Wednesday.

It indicates that overall crime declined by almost 4 percent last year compared to the year before.

Violent crimes were down by slightly more than 3 percent, property crimes by almost 4 percent.

There were two homicides in 2018, the same as 2017.

There were 9 fewer rapes in 2018, a dozen less aggravated assaults but the number of robberies increased by 6.

Ventura police say there were 104 fewer burglaries, 50 less thefts, and one less vehicle theft.

But there were twice as many arson fires.
