Sunday November 24, 2019

Updated--Ventura County authorities are investigating the death of a Santa Barbara County man who died in an apparent boating accident south of Ventura Harbor.

The exact circumstances that led to the death of the 60-year-old Scott Escalera of Goleta are unknown.

The authorities say he took a small aluminum boat, a skiff, out Saturday afternoon to go lobster fishing.

His body was found in the estuary at the mouth of the Santa Clara River Sunday morning.

About the same time, his abandoned boat was found adrift in the ocean approximately two nautical miles southeast of Ventura Harbor and about 1.5 nautical miles offshore.

The discovery of the body and the boat were made by two different agencies independent of each other and when they compared notes they realize it was related.

A discussion with Escalera's family filled some additional details.

But exactly what happened and why remains under investigation.
